    The song — or, more properly, the suggestion that the last two PCs should sing a song before joining the party — drew a lot of derision from reviewers in the UK, where I lived at the time.

    I do think DL1 benefits a lot from the DM, at least, having read the first novel: a lot of the flavour of the world doesn’t really come through in the adventure. The revamped D&D 3.5-compatible version from Margaret Weis Productions, _Dragons of Autumn_, makes a lot of changes to improve the early wandering-about portion of the adventure and is much more flavourful (though also more complex).
